Happy New Year from Tobacco Free Boone County!
The first newsletter of the year is centered around tobacco point-of-sale marketing, or the types of marketing tactics tobacco companies use to try to persuade consumers (young and old alike) to make the decision to purchase their products where purchases are completed, like the cash register.
When you’re pulling up to the gas station to fill up your tank or get your caffeine fix, what kinds of product ads do you see plastered over the windows or propped up in the grass? Ads for cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, perhaps? When you go inside to pay for your purchases, what do you see directly behind the cashier? A “power wall” of tobacco products. These marketing tactics may not even register in our minds, but the tobacco industry has advertising down to a deadly art.
