We’re starting to learn that if a teen uses an e-device, there’s a good chance they’re going to start using cigarettes in the future. A study published in the journal Pediatrics wanted to see if the opposite was true- if a high school student starts using cigarettes, are they likely to switch to the cigarette’s electronic counterpart somewhere down the road? It would make sense if they did. Electronic devices are the number one tobacco product of choice among youth and the wide array of flavor options are too tempting for many teens to resist.
This 2 year study revealed that e-cigarette use was not linked to future traditional cigarette use- they didn’t even start using e-cigarettes in an effort to quit like many adults do. Youth cigarette smoking could be a one way street for these kids. This is especially concerning because nearly 9 out of 10 adult smokers started before they got out of high school.
If you or someone you know is a high school student starting down this path, there are options to break free. The Indiana Tobacco Quitline offers free services to teens all across the state. Click here to learn more.
