According to the most recent county data, nearly 1 out of the every 8 babies born in Boone County has been affected in some way due to smoking. This includes low birth weight, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and reduced lung function.
Approximately 1 out of every 10 pregnant women in Boone County is a smoker. With every drag a mom-to-be takes on her cigarette, the toxins and cancer-causing chemicals in the smoke have a direct line to baby’s delicate lungs and developing body. And it’s not only moms we should worry about- anyone who smokes around her, like her partner, puts her baby at risk. A study published by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that a child’s risk of childhood cancer increases with every year their father smoked before conception.
If you have a little one on the way, Indiana’s free tobacco quit line gives moms a little extra TLC. In addition to unlimited access to the quit line, expecting moms get extra scheduled calls with their quit coach before and after she delivers.
